Eating After a Workout

I’m 28, I’ve been working out for a while, and one thing I’ve learned is that what I eat before a workout really affects how I feel — but it doesn’t need to be complicated. I’m not trying to “optimize” every lift. I just want energy and to not feel like I’m going to pass out mid-set.

Before a workout, I usually focus on something easy to digest with carbs and a little protein. If I’m heading to the gym within an hour, it’s usually something simple like a banana, toast with honey, or yogurt with fruit. If I have more time, I’ll eat something more filling like eggs and toast or oatmeal with protein.

I’ve tried working out without eating and sometimes it’s fine, but other times I feel weak and annoyed the whole workout. I’ve learned to listen to that. Pre-workout food isn’t about eating “clean,” it’s about giving your body enough fuel to show up and move.
